Dallapiccola, Luigi and Petrassi, Goffredo – “Musica Da Camera” – [Mode Records]

Perhaps Italian 20th Century composers Luigi Dallapiccola and Goffredo Petrassi are together in this album because they both were born in 1904? These pieces are very enjoyable, but still offer lots of challenges. Petrassi pairs mandolin and guitar to good effect, also offers an intriguing flute duet. Dallapiccola’s piano piece is lush, his last ensemble has a gorgeous mezzo-soprano vocal, and the Tartiniana Seconda reaches back to eighteenth century composers such as Bach and Tartini.

Outstanding, also the first appearance of these composers in the KFJC library.
