Bisio, Michael/Boni, Raymond/Duval, Dominic/McPhee, Joe – “Port of Saints” – [CJR]Two long tracks (51 and 15 minutes respectively) were recorded at the end of an Albert Ayler 2000 Project Tour in May of 2000 and were obviously inspired by Ayler’s work. Interesting work from Bisio and Duval on bass (sometimes bowed) and Boni on electric guitar hold forth for the first 14 minutes or so of Track 1, then McPhee’s squawky moaning sax explodes in a way that I found very disturbing and dark, probably appropriate since “Port of Saints” is a novel by William S. Burroughs. Track 2 is a bit lighter, quirkier, and almost playful. Highly improvised, experimental and difficult. Comment on this review |
