Watermann, John – “Calcutta Gas Chamber” – [Nd]John visited the Calcutta gas chamber in 1990 and recorded some sounds from inside. By then, it was an abandoned old building, looking to be refurbished. Those field recordings, found sounds, along with electronic manipulations create a disturbing image. It’s almost like a horror soundtrack, without the cheesy organ music. Grotesque itchings, sniffings, scampering bugs, demon voices, dripping broken lit hallways, and scratching your skin til your down to the bone, are found on here. “One can rarely pinpoint a location or action but the images the sounds conjure up are of all sorts of nefarious activities related to death by machinery.” John passed away in 2002.
