Bassett, Marcia and Graf, Jenny – “Peradam” – [Utech Records]

Invisible sci-fi movie, captured for your headphones,
capturing alien crystal-based life forms dreaming in
sine waves. Voices filter in through the transmission,
as the life forms feign for human contact. It is a crucial
touch that elevates this excellent Utech release. “Zero
As Sky” has a slurred shaman beneath the buzz, before we
hit one of those Prisoner-like bounces of guitar telling
us everything is suspect. This bleeds towards a blender
of fuzz, before hitting an elliptical yoyo and the shaman
is back, but now she’s growing angry. The longer pieces
really do evolve well, but there’s something special about
the sandwiched “Black Waters Glow” cut, with its delicate
guitar strains and wavery siren singing, it somehow tames
the savage effects racks for 6 minutes like a mirage.
Noise folk created by contrast. The stun of the whole is
greater than the sum of the pieces. But loops and wires
rise up on the final track “Phantasmagorical Mapping”
with the ghost of the sirens now a vox humana canyon
opening up at times, amidst the crunch of distortion and
tides of static. More women taking back the noise!
