Orcutt, Bill – “A New Way to Pay Old Debts” – [Palilalia]

The follow-up full-length to the 7″, finds Orcutt still
solo exploring his brand of 4-string bee-sting blues. He’s
taken the two lowest strings off his old Kay acoustic,
amped it up and slacked it down. Slippery sustained notes rise
above frantic cycles (gnawa on speed). Low slapped notes
through the gritty pick-up provide more percussion than
any bass melody. An occasional open-string brrrronnng lets
you catch your ear’s breath between the flurrious furies
up the neck. Eliot Sharp’s sawed-off blues, Loren Connor’s
raw ache, Sonny Sharrock’s restlessness, John Fahey’s
skilled pond millings… Elements of all of those, but
Orcutt’s pioneered his own sound between them all. If this
is indeed an illegitmate son of the blues, then I’m curious
to see what the crossroads bring for Orcutt. Does he stay
solo with this for a while, or wind up in a bigger sandbox
with others shackled to the shambles of that Kay. I could
see some freak jazz, or firing arrows into Carla Bozulich’s
Evangeline or who knows? I’m looking forward to life after
Debt.
