Olson, Mike – “Incidental” – [Henceforth]

A fascinating six-part musical suite that could be categorized as ambient orchestral avant-garde jazz rock soundtrack fusion music. OK, maybe not, but something close to that. Olson the composer has his own way of doing things: he guides the musicians with instructions and gestures, records their parts, and then painstakingly assembles the resulting fragments via computer software. The liner notes tell us that most of the musical parts were recorded individually, with little or no interaction between the players, and if that???s true Olson has done an amazing job of piecing this thing together. It flows seamlessly from one section to the next, from big-band-style excitement to ripping electric jazz fusion to spaced-out atmospherics, and then back again. Olson plays synthesizer and electric piano. Drummer Kevin Washington really makes this thing go. A highly recommended trip.
