Led Bib – “Sensible Shoes” – [Cuneiform]Drummer Mark Holub leads this loose and funky UK quintet (two saxes, keyboards, bass, and drums) who don’t take their jazz too seriously (a track title such as “Squirrel Carnage” is the tip-off there). The band wails and blasts through their rowdy material, and a lot of the time you’ll be hanging on for dear life. Holub wrote most of the material, and he pushes the music with some of the most infectious crashing and banging I’ve heard in a while. There are some soft and soulful moments, but these guys seem to prefer diving into loud, spazzy jazz with a big beat. By the way, a Led Bib is that thing you have to wear when your dentist is taking x-rays. Comment on this review |
