Tenney, James ??? Melody, Ergodicity and Indeterminacy: The Barton Workshop {Mode}

This New Mexican music theorist composed music solos for piano, flute, and clarinet but also was one of the first to experiment & create electronic & computer compositions.?? He collaborated with & studied under the likes of John Cage & Harry Partch among notable others.?? Tenney was fascinated with unpredictable characteristics common to computer generated music & explored its various concepts & abnormalities.?? The sounds here span 72 years and compile Tenney???s penchant for minimal & sometimes barely audible solo pieces & semi-structured combinations of avant garde electronics & free form classical instrumental accompaniments.?? Sounds are muted meanderings & sorta cerebral improvisations which evince occasional leanings toward percussion & hissing.?? It???s sorta like Hans Edler???s Elektron Kukeso meets Raymond Scott???s Manhattan Research Inc. with a touch of Pauline Oliveros but just way simplified & unusually subtle.
