Burroughs, William S. ??? Breakthrough In Grey Room {Sub Rosa}William S. Burroughs was a Beat Generation poet, spoken word artist, avant garde painter, controversial author, opiate addict, expatriate & incidentally negligent criminal convicted in absentia homicide among other notorious traits & circumstances. Here he joins English performance artist & sound poet Brion Gysin who was arguably the first to create cut ups & collages of sound. His work inspired Burroughs to do the same on Breakthrough In Grey Room. Basically, Burroughs outlines tape cut up theory & puts it into astonishingly brilliant practice. Several monologues & romps through London & New York with Ian Sommerville who also masterminded a good portion of the recordings on this release. Plus some Joujouka music or Sufi trance musicians from Morocco also joined by Ornette Coleman. A very strange & historical listening experience that retains a fresh sound despite its recordings & cut ups having taken place in the early 60???s. FCC: #15 (SHIT) Comment on this review |
