Dolphy, Eric – “Great Concert of Eric Dolphy, The ” – [Fantasy Records]

Live recording of this July 1961 landmark concert at the Five Spot. All musicians are superb whether soloing or not. Dolphy wouldn???t be pigeon holed ??? he is straddling free jazz, hard bop, and was called ???too out to be in, too in to be out???. Here he plays alto sax, flute, and somewhat rare to jazz -bass clarinet. Booker Little is spectacular on trumpet, sadly he died 4 months later at the age of 23!

Fire Waltz 13:10 ??? Fast tempo waltz(!), ED: alto sax.
Bee Vamp 12:11 ??? Driving, very cool, ED: bass clarinet.
The Prophet 21:06 ??? Most dissonant, ED: alto sax.
Aggression 16:35 ??? Very hard driving, ED: bass clarinet.
Like Someone to Love 19:29 ??? Spare disjointed start, then swings. ED: flute.
Number Eight 15:25 ??? Strong forward momentum, ED: alto sax.
Booker???s Waltz 14:30 ??? Very fast waltz(!), ED: bass clarinet

Highest recommendation!!!
