Fern Knight ??? Music for Witches and Alchemists A-Library CD {VHF}

Haunting acoustic folk & magical renaissance prog conjured by Fern Knight out in some mythical enchanted forest??? uh, Philadelphia.?? This is essentially Margie Wienk???s project but enlists the local soothsaying sounds of Espers??? Greg Weeks, Meg Baird, & Jesse Sparhawk among others.?? Its tone is thematic & quite melancholy.?? Not all songs grip you immediately.?? Implementing bowed saw, synths & harmonium alongside accordion, cello & harp and having it compliment Wienk???s acoustic guitar work & soft gorgeous vocals works well in most instances but occasionally lacks in others.?? Sometimes certain instruments squeal over others, almost canceling out the melody.?? Nevertheless, these sad lovelorn lullabies exhibit enough rich beauty & tension without having to go overboard.?? I really enjoyed the percussion provided & also appreciated Fern Knight???s ability to allow rhythm to reign & carry the songs.?? Not a bad out for their second full length release.
