Plug ??? Drum ???n??? Bass for Papa A-Library CD {Nothing / Interscope}Plug is one of several pseudonyms for the astoundingly vibrant Luke Vibert (a.k.a. Wagon Christ). Depending on his alias, Vibert???s U.K. projects delve deep into varying sound pockets. Wagon Christ was more free wheelin??? trip hop & electronica oriented. Plug stepped forward as the big daddy o??? drum n??? bass breakbeats. Vibert devised supremely inventive & percussive experimental jungle on what are essentially bedroom recordings featured as three excellent EP???s and the Drum ???n??? Bass for Papa LP. Its nocturnal urban beats inspired predominantly by hip hop but with recognizable jazz, soul, & funk influence. Killer samples including Flava Flav & Chuck D rappin??? ???bass for your face,??? followed by, ???bring that beat back!.??? Electronic instrumentation is the norm but the rhythmic change ups, head drillin??? jungle beats, and piano, trumpet, congas add a richly diverse dynamic. It ranges from harmonic structures & melodic vignettes with suspenseful intros to slick tones with Middle Eastern vibes, to spacey & atmospheric to dark & neurotically aggressive. This is very versatile, enjoyable, & essential to understanding the Drum ???n??? bass scene emerging from England???s inner sanctum during the late 1990???s. This was also put out on Trent Reznor???s Nothing Records label at a time when he was releasing music by renowned independent artists like Plug who had also remixed the Nine Inch Nails single, ???The Perfect Drug.???
