Sounds of Silence [coll] – [Alga Marghen]

CONCEPTUALISM 4.0. Brilliance is really all I can say. Brilliance. But of course, I’ll say more. The incredibly clever folks at the stunning Milan label, Alga Marghen, have taken records to a new level. Pulling thirty recordings from an astounding array of artists and such, including Ciccone Youth, Robert Wyatt, Yves Klein, Afrika Bambaataa, John Denver, Audiodisc Videotronic Group, and on and on, Alga Marghen has created one of the most diverse compilations ever.
And what do the artists all have in common? Silence. Yep. Silence. Tracks specifically of silence, put onto record or CD. The tracks are pulled from albums (mostly), so not only do we get to hear the artists’ silence, we also hear the wear and tear of these recordings on the album in the form of scratches and glitches. The liner notes are exceptional and explain each recordings use of silence. Some reasons are comical, others political. The context the individual piece is from is missed, but by placing them all together a new meaning is created. You decide what that may be. I, for one, am giggling and jumping up and down because of it.
DJ’s: Great for layering or beds. Also good for filling up last minute needed Currents.
Did I mention the cover is ripped off Simon and Garfunkel’s “Sound of Silence”.
