Lindsay, Jacob / Looney, Scott / Robair, Gino – “Yellowcake ” – [Rastascan Records]Despite its ???Yellowcake??? title and the cute line drawing of a slice of that very thing on the cover, this CD doesn’t suggest baked goods to me as much as it does rodents or other small creatures in the kitchen, getting into something (OK, maybe it???s a cake) in the middle of the night. In other words, it???s a CD full of small squeaking and scribble-scrabble sounds. Then it got amplified somehow; maybe whoever lives in the house left a contact mic open or something. Robair, with his percussion and ???energized surfaces???, brings to mind various creatures scurrying about; Lindsay???s clarinet squeaks might be the rodents/bugs/whatever they are, communicating with one another; and Looney, I don???t know, he might be in charge of the more or less ambient kitchen noises, like refrigerator hum, faucet dripping in a sink full of dishes, and like that. The three musicians (apparently known collectively as Yellowcake) seem to be completely on the same page, each offering perfect little noises toward a unified whole. Enjoyable work from local sound wizards. Comment on this review |
