See, there’s this small island in south east asia that nooo one talks
about, cuz its inhabitants are NOT HUMAN! Instead, they are these
overgrown insects, six foot or so…you’ve probably dreamt about them,
a lot of people have. Their exoskeletons have to be exceptionally strong
to support such a large frame, in addition they create some fantastic
timbres…and the striking of various plates, scales and cilia are how
they communicate. At first it was thought that such communication was
simply essential…locating food, engaging in courtship and so on.
However some renegade entomologists were able to live with these
amazon arthropods and discovered that the sonic emanations are also
a complex form of artistry enjoyed by these evolved insects. Tom Nunn
has provided some field recordings, including a prayer (#6), sounds
from a nursery (#8) and a political debate (#4). The debate actually
revolved around whether the entomologists should be eaten or allowed
to return to “human civilization” (the tones struck for that are
actually the same as for an obscenity, an F and then a C and a C
using a loose western scale translation)…anyways, after the debate
it turns out Nunn survived.
