Gueule Ouverte – “Gueule Ouverte” – [Stochastic Releases]

A fortified 45 RPM 12″ from a Montreal duo. Punk rock in excelsior! Filthy, foul and fun. And sung in French… Driving drums and dirty guitar, the band name translates as Gaping Maw, mouthy with a sneering lip, and some spittle flying off the tongue. It’s not as demented as the Brainbombs, but it shares that sort of primordial push. And maybe a bit of a wink too, humor and anger seem to be mating in the shadows of these short songs. Regis Victor and Nick Murer are the masterminds. Is one the victorious king and the other the label master? Whoever they are, they are pissed off at hipsters, cons and work. The closing track specifically targets those cons, with a great stop/start intro, feedback whinnying, then it enters a sludgy little bridge, before pounding out their emotional saturation. Short blasts of an often kinetic aesthetic. A 2012 issue, but still gutter pure and punchy. Really good stuff, “Grenoble Pour Toujours” is the slow song if you want to make out, moping bass replaces the sparking guitars. Stoke the stochastic, but fear the facades that smell bad. Frantic raunchy Canadians…the best kind!
