Kretzmer, Yoni / Drury, Andrew – “Oranges” – [Out Now Recordings]

Kretzmer, the man behind the Out Now label, is the man
out front on this release. With a tenor sax blaring
echoes of Albert Ayler (check the title cut “Oranges”!)
That’s some high octane stuff, and drummer Drury is
bowing or scraping or doing some funky junk percussion
(one of his fortes apparently, he leads workshops in
the fine art of found pounding). That goes through
some absolutely harrowing stretches, like a piece
of music being electrocuted (indeed Drury’s presumably
organic sounds almost sound like plugged in noise
at times). But check out how beautifully they close
that piece, with a softer almost spiritual pining. Wow!
The pattern for this is release is odd longer numbers
then short even sketches. Not for the duo to catch their
breath, they could double disk you in a NY minute, but
for the listener to pause and process. Okay, maybe also
for Drury to play with some of his toys and objects.
Chittering, whistling and bowed notes (percussion is
the wrong word) that almost blur with the high end tweet
and scree from Yoni. Of the longer piece, “Akushkash”
starts sputtery and gets cycling while “Evocations” hovers
off the ground for about 5 minutes before moving off the
rolling toms and into more fiery sax arpeggios. And
again, “Oranges” are sweet and in season. A well connecting
duo on display here.
