Kellari Trio – “Kellari Trio” – [Edgetone Records]

Heavenly Helsinki slinky jazz. Starts out strong w/
“Slow” resounding like an establishing shot for a
film on some gigantic mountain on an alien planet.
Horns calling like those Tibetan long boomers, Mikko
Innanen’s flutes whispering winds, Teppo Hauta-aho
on cello running from rock to rock like an Ernst
Reijseger renegade. Even after “Slow” recedes the
next few pieces are lower-case slow, and upper-case
tense. Composition strong, and more of an overture
with cinematic flair. On “Pyry” the jazz lights come
on, Hauta-aho quick on the bass, Mike Koskinen solo
on top with his pocket trumpet. Squeaky freaky funk
on “Mating Dance” then recoil in a sort of shakuhachi
drone spa with “Water.” “Summer Night” more captivating
composition and Innanen’s flute a fire fly in the
night. Feels like a darkness on a lot of tracks but
a burnished one, like a deep rich wood. Variety on
display, and brevity too. The 17 tracks are short
but never rushed, nor incomplete. All three squeeze in
percussion at points. Really excellent from start to
Finnish. Kellari=Cellar as in the bassist/cellist’s.
From his home underground to our radio underground!
