Tuk – “Proud Princess of a Brand New City ” – [(K-RAA-K)3]

A problem I have with glitch music is that while I dig the secret decoder
pop that comes in between static packets and soft resets, often I sense
the source material is not that compelling. Whether deconstruction needs
construction we’ll leave to Derrida, but with Guillaume Graux’s project
Tuk, I do sense that the unscrambled digital eggs are indeed works of
note[s]. Maybe it’s that his input comes from his own guitar work, so it
has an ontological pop kernel? That said, while some tracks like the
title track here do showcase guitar sweeps and recognizable chordlets
drifting, many other pieces are sufficiently disintegrated to pass the
Belladonna test of a string-less universe. A bitwise rain moistens some
of “Moeten We De Grimaldi’s Niet Redden”, seeming vinyl backscatter shows
up on “Travel Implants” (so maybe Graux does import sound), “Knokke Zoet”
almost feels like African juju pop ping-pong packed in ice. Strangely
soothing by way of absence, on top of of all this, the label K-raa-k
looks to be a solid new star to illuminate KFJC’s galaxy. Very promising
form excerpts online, Ignatz must be our next stop!
