Graewe, Georg / Reijseger, Ernst / Hemingway, Gerry – “Continuum ” – [Winter & Winter]Trio improvisations, generally on the quiet side, featuring piano, cello, and drums/percussion. No discussion beforehand of the musical agenda, the players just staked out their places in a nice theater-type setting in Munich 2005, and rolled the tape. These three had worked together as a trio quite a bit previously, affording them a comfort level with one another???s playing. Reijseger and Hemingway do what they can to keep things interesting, but they don???t seem to do much of the driving. I???d say that Graewe???s piano dominates the group???s sound; being a much bigger, more resonant instrument than the others, its sustaining tones sort of drape over everything else in such a quiet setting. What I liked: Track 4 blends low rumbling noises with percussive high-register action on the piano keyboard and quiet strums on the cello; and track 9 evolves from random, skittish sounds into an enthusiastic jazzy groove. Yes, I???d call this music jazz, but of the most atmospheric, least virtuosic kind. Sounds and moods and suggestions and responses are the focus here. Comment on this review |
