Wingdings – “Symbol of Infinity” – [Grand Imperial]

Wingdings: “a series of dingbat fonts which render letters as a variety of symbols”.
Wingdings: a series of dingbat fonts fueled by conspiracies including clues to 9/11.
Wingdings: a trilogy of albums. Wingdings I- Return To Earth
Wingdings II- Zarathustra’s Puzzle
Wingdings III- Symbol of Infinity
Wingdings: a popular theory being that these are a collection of recordings picked up via satellite of broadcasts by a far-away alien race – who were attempting to emulate radio broadcasts that they had received from Earth – known as Earthling music – as a form of communication.
Wingdings: from Outer Limits Recordings, the moniker of Sam Mehran aka Sam M, Matrix Metals, Yoga, Foxy Baby, formerly of Test Icicles.
Wingdings: “Symbol of Infinity”. The third of the trilogy.

This one took some digging and I may not fully have it but??? Wingdings is a project of Outer Limits Recordings (aka Sam Mehran, outsider punk pop rocker of mega cult status). The alien recording story is a way to throw the listener off the hook that it was probably recorded by Mehran/Outer Limits Recordings (OLR) one summer in Echo Park. These are 18 songs, eight called Rice and eight called Fried. These are OLR tripping the light fantastic with his (or their) guitar(s), jamming away with some fun distorted, fuzzy rambling. If you remember a long time ago there were these things called am transistor radios that had a very tinny sound, whether it be sports radio or America’s top 40. That is the sound of the whole album: tinny, crusty, dusty, far away. Maybe it is an alien transmission signal coming from destinations in space. Whatever, we haven’t heard anything quite like this before. It’s muted strains of rhythm are not quite toe tapping, not quite hummable, in fact not distinctly recognizable. But as a whole it is purely identifiable, distinguished by a uniqueness that may stick more in the back of your mind. Listen and try to figure it out.
