Braasch, Jonas – “Global Reflections ” – [Deep Listening]

Braasch is a German musician and professor/researcher of acoustic and auditory phenomena. Here???s a CD of his soprano sax improvisations, sometimes mixed with field recordings, some bass and a few beats, and electronic manipulations. The odd-numbered tracks are untreated field recordings from Berlin, Rome, Hong Kong, and other places. They range from urban sounds to strange bird calls. The even-numbered tracks feature Braasch???s sax, either all alone (#2,6,10,14), or combined with other elements (#4,8,12). The sax was recorded in a live, reverberant room, and Braasch is quite good; suave and melodic with just a bit of skronk now and then. Normally I???m a fan of musical projects that involve field recordings, but the ones here are mostly too short for my taste, and they start and stop abruptly; I would have liked to hear more of them, lengthwise. The tracks with beats (#4,8) are the weaker ones, although #8 has some cool Turkish-influenced percussion. #12, the longest piece, is the most successful hybrid: blues-flavored sax, longer, weirder, field recordings, and just a touch of bass. Interesting stuff.
