Kid Millions & Sauter, Jim – “Fountain” – [Family Vineyard]

millions_sauter
Two man stampede, delivering near complete walls of disrupto-rock.
Or is it distorto-rock? With Jim Sauter’s enhanced sax sometimes
flailing so hard through electronics that it seems like the power
is being drained and grid wobbles for just a second, before back
into the lurch. Or is it disturbo-rock? Listening to this and
trying to just react emotionally, not sure I felt much more
than a demanding anger. And if you thought anger was an energy,
demanding energy multiplies it. There is a moment at the closing
“Clairaudience” where the onslaught abates and Sauter’s sax
splashes in a reverb spiral for a while for some contrast, and
drummer Kid Millions (from Oneida) eases up. At times I wished
for more the other way, let Millions roll with it a while solo
(you know, give the drummer some) But mostly it’s full bore
improv rock molten core. Sauter (along with Don Dietrich
whose solo 12″ from 2003 is a must if you dig this) pioneered
Borbetomagus, a KFJC staple from before we started putting our
playlists on line. Fans of those flames, will happily warm their
toes, ears and needles on this release 30+ years down the pipe.
Not sure if the righteous boo here will pull in any new listeners,
but it will spark plenty interest, like on “Turkana” as folks
figure out there is a single sax at the center of the stormpede.
