Plotkin, James – “Kurtlanmak/Damascus ” – [Utech]

A reissue of Plotkin’s Utech release “Kurtlanmak”, which sold out soon after its release. The original CD had one long piece (29 minutes), a live 2003 solo performance of ever-changing texture-scapes with Plotkin on guitar, laptop, and electronics. This reissue includes a second track, “Damascus”, a similar (though shorter at 22 minutes) 2005 live performance. This new track adds trumpet, drumkit, and gongs to Plotkin’s original setup. The two pieces are nearly identical for the first minute or so, with a loopy backwards-sounding guitar figure, but after that they diverge from one another and never look back. Each piece moves through several sections, of which looped guitars, low hums, electronic glitchery, power drones, and tinkly string strums are just a few. “Damascus” seems more varied, a bit more exciting due to its drums and cymbals and gongs, and it has now become my favorite of the two.
