Barrikad – “Through The Voice One Becomes Animal” – [Nil By Mouth Records]

barrikad

2013 Cassette release from the Swedish Industrial group. Not sure if it’s reissued material or not: the booklet (which is otherwise mostly cool demon illustrations, catty swipes at Brighter Death Now, and rhetorical left-activist garbage) refers to them as a product of the 90s scene, but I could only find information about releases from the 2000s. It’s political industrial in the vein of SPK, Nocturnal Emissions and Test Dept (apparently early Propergol was also a big influence). Two tracks, 8 and 7 minutes, of machine sounds, ominous dark ambience, pulsing synth loops, stilted beats and voice samples (at least, I assume they’re sampled). Side A has a bunch of pretty dramatic English-language sound bites pertaining to the Red Army Faction of 1970s Germany. Side B’s voices appear to be in German. Regardless of one’s feelings about militant Communism/Anarchism, the atmosphere is satisfyingly oppressive here.
