Ghoul – “Splatterthrash” – [Tankcrimes]

Formed in 2001, Ghoul are a hooded quartet drawn from the best of the Bay Area Death Metal/Crust scene, performing in character as the cannibalistic mutants ‘Digestor’ (Engorged, Impaled, Stormcrow,) ‘Cremator’ (Ludicra, Impaled, Exhumed), ‘Dissector’ (Born/Dead) and ‘Fermentor’ (Dystopia, Asunder). They play Death-Metal-flavored Crossover Thrash with a GWAResque horror-comedy backstory about Ghoul and their ongoing struggles to save their homeland of Creepsylvania; this conceit is also present in the band’s legendary stage act, which usually features monster stage invasions and blood-soaked audiences. On this 2006 release, the concept album narrative is not so pronounced that the casual listener would notice it, but ‘Splatterthrash’ seems to document Ghoul’s encounter with an evil cult of ‘Christo-Fascists’ who have created a giant killer robot with Walt Disney’s brain inside of it in order to steal the Crystal Skull the band have been using to crack nuts. Fortunately it holds up as a metal album independently of the story being told; lots of surprisingly epic guitar god stuff going on here, Carcass, Cadaver, Population Reduction, maybe even a hint of Kreator? The riffs here are in fact good enough to prove that Ghoul are no novelty act. All the members do vocals, so there’s quite a variety, ranging from goofy spoken word (A3, A6) and hardcore gang choruses (A2, B2, B4) to the predominating shrieks, growls and gurgles. Lyrics are sometimes discernible and mostly not. A5 features a theremin and has, along with instrumental B1 and B6, pronounced Surf elements(!). Sci-fi noises and robot vocals a la Voivod on B4. Fundamentalist Christian samples on B5. The short tracks are the best ones. Chow down on some Splatterthrash!
