COUM Transmissions: Home Aged and The 18 Month Hope [coll] – [Dais]

DAIS_051_1500x1500_1024x1024

2013 vinyl pressing of archival recordings, transferred from tape by Aaron Dilloway, documenting early Genesis P-Orridge manifestations via his performance art project COUM Transmissions. This LP is a mixture of experimental sound art and interviews/spoken word. A1 is a 1973 radio interview with GPO on local radio in Yorkshire about his clever art installation on the theme of bureaucracy, arranged for the ‘Fanfare for Europe’ festival. A2 is brief, primitive electronic noise burst followed by a possibly staged series of physical threats. A3 finds Gen plinking random piano chords like a senile ragtime artist as he screams and chants along. A4 is a lengthy live ‘rock’ jam performed during an opening slot for Hawkwind: tuneless guitar, possible electronics, aggressive drums and some shouting. To be honest it’s a little unbearable. B1 is a high note with strangely effecting stoned tragic clown idiot savant poetry from COUM member ‘Fizzey Peat.’ B2 is a surprisingly versatile piece of rhythmic violin-based ‘noise.’ B3 find GPO and Fizzey Peat collaborating on a lengthy acid jam featuring baby talk, random acoustic guitar plucking, chimes, bird noises, what sounds like hand drumming, and more. It’s got interesting atmosphere but not much else. B4 is another brief interview, containing prophetic statements from GPO about his new project, Throbbing Gristle. A mixture of really enchanting stuff here with other cuts that feel like filler, but Gristorians will find it an interesting document at least. Try A1 or B1 for spoken word, or A2 and B2 for interesting sound experiments. One FCC on B4: “couldn’t sell that shit if you tried,” says Gen.
