a Fashionable Disease – “a Fashionable Disease” – [Pet Goat, The]

AFD-lg

Five-piece band drawing on influences both eclectic and eccentric. They appear to be quite obscure, and so I’m not sure when this album came out (late 2000s?) or where they’re from (East Coast?) – but I do know that their vocalist/guitarist/bassist/synth player is one Dario Fariello, known and loved around here lately for his over-the-top power electronics solo project, Botched Facelift. Fariello is joined by a drummer, another bassist/guitarist, a saxophonist and a trombonist to create this well-coordinated cacophony. A few relevant terms for A Fashionable Disease’s sound might be ‘no-wave’ ‘jazzcore’ and ‘rock-leaning noise rock.’ The first three tracks are part Contortions, part DNA, part Naked City and part Dystopia: The guitar can’t decide whether it’s playing mathcore or sludge, the drummer rules all over the place, there’s a lot of free-jazz note-mangling on the brass and the vocals are basically in bloody-esophagus grindcore territory. The lyrics are politically-charged and often quite obscene, cramming a lot of sex, violence and heavy-handed anti-imperialist disgust into just three songs (no comment sample lyric: “Anne Coulter’s head comes right out the screen/Chops off your dick and strangles your dreams”) but no lyrics are really discernible through the screaming (well, maybe one ‘fuck you’ on t.3). T.4, as a longer, more abstract instrumental, presents a slight change in formula, but there’s still plenty of harshness there for both jazzophiles and noisefreaks to enjoy, as well as some more whimsical (or perverse, depending on your inclination) synth stuff that really drives home the Botched Facelift connection. I’d say taken as a whole this album is more punk (the Stooges’ ‘L.A. Blues?’) than jazz, but the musicianship is definitely jazz-level. Would have given me a headache, if I hadn’t already had one.
