Ware, David S. Quartet – “BalladWare ” – [Thirsty Ear Recordings]

Recorded in 1999, released only now? Here’s
the story from the mouth of the (Thirsty) Ear:
the quartet had completed a European tour and
wanted to lay down a studio capture of where
they were at, but “after a few futile attempts
to record the DSW Quartet came to a realization
that the only way to match their energy level
was in a ballad mode which caught everyone by
surprise.” Ware seems super-fluid on this
release, sometimes his tenor moves like one
of those New Year’s party horns, it rolls out
quick and back. Shipp is mostly florid and
full in arpeggiating out melodies, slow and
dark ballads as per the title, kind of brings
to mind his work on the outstanding “New Orbit”
Evidently Guillermo E. Brown had just joined
the four on drums, sounds excellent on this.
William Parker…anchor…depeptively deep!
With three covers (including “Tenderly”) this
release might be a bridge to some of the jazz
fans up the dial…it has an overall sweetness
to it…tuxedo friendly but will still burn
holes in your old jeans a la the Hard-Ware!
Enjoy this Any-Ware.
