Caceres, Juan Pablo – “Orquestra ” – [Garrapata Discos]

Holy Jorge-Ringo! Red Hot Chilean Plunderphonics, but done so
deftly you can’t taste the difference. Caceres, working from
who-knows-how-many samples, and working between Chile and
Stanford, has created a virtual orchestra that definitely
raises hairs on the back of the neck, and perhaps eyebrows
behind batons. On “Lo Gaseoso” he manages to trap a flute that
sounds like some wildcat, clawing its way out of a corner. On
“Lo Metalico” he features giant trombonosouruses at the start,
swiping at each other’s elongated necktones…towards the end
the processed horns take on a timbre more akin to a snare drum
before winding up as mere exclamation marks, fossils of what
they were before. The ending title piece brings together the
force fields of many instruments, rattling bows recall urgent
typewriters. Definitely a sense of becoming more than being;
tension through repetition, winds the pegs of the violins and
listeners tighter and tighter. Recombinant composition, the
next step of course is to get an orchestra together to then
actually realize these live, a la Ricci Rucker’s “Fugu” from
the hiphop realm.
