Millis, Robert – “120″ – [Etude Records]

Note – KFJC already had a copy reviewed by Sal 9000 but
Rob provided one on his recent visit, so I wrote up these
warped words while checking it out in the comfort of my own mind.

Rob from the Climax Golden Twins flies solo, but he’s
often not alone on this record. Four nice slices of
(phone) call and response? The leadoff number dials up
the proprietor of Records Revisited in New Yawk, and
while he conducts a deal/steal, a crackly ominous
78 (from before the 40′s went bad one presumes) makes
the Caretaker look like a one needle pony. That
transaction comes to a cold stop with a slap/firecracker
and into some Southeast Asian smelting place?!? That
and indeed the first three, end up in a pocket cathedral
Rob builds out his guitar and some stonified dronified
effect[s]. ResOnance with a capital O, baby! Track two
is crickets and a gamelan bandleader followed by some
Washingtune ham radio wryly getting “All Balled Up”
then a very spooky (to me at least) phone therapist. This
time the cathedral winds up with a train running through
it. The guitar gets ominous before a killer found sound
in a washing machine. That’s yer hit single. #3 must
be a dead-mute to start, but the cathedral of sound
awaits you. “Charcoal Twins” might not be Aimless and
Andy (Steve and Pete?) talking about a [r]evolution
with some outer limit Southern Georgia vibe before
a gentle acoustic twang and electric reverb wash cleanses
us all. Look out for the 30 seconds o’ meditative
silence at the end of that track. Hey we got this five
years ago, but Rob gave us a copy this past weekend
so I thought I’d post a lame-ass review of it here.
