Taxpayers, The – “God Forgive These Bastards: Songs From The Forgotten Life of” – [Asian Man Records]

a3775824951_10

Killer gypsy punk from Portland Oregon. What started in 2007 as a guitar/bass/drum trio, soon formed into a 7-peice guitar, drum, accordion, bass, trumpet, baritone sax, banjo troupe! Couple tracks with harmonica. The tracks here are based on the stories of a Portland local transient named Henry Turner, who was largely regarded as a drunkard who liked to tell stories, some outlandish, but some so much so you couldn’t help but believe him. Check out the liner notes on the back for the full story.

With the gypsy accordion beat and drums giving this the main drive, alongside the crunchy male vocals, the sax and trumpet only coming in every once and a while, every song on here’s a winner. I dig the tracks that include the female vocals, esp. the track ‘I Love You Like an Alcoholic,’ which is my favorite from the lot, but again, these are all great. The last track is an interview with one of Henry’s childhood ‘friends.’

Favorites: 1,4,6,8,10,12,13

PGM: some tight segues and FCCs on tracks 7,11, and 13
