I Burn – “Infraharmonies, Scald Cavities” – [Fuoco]

This 1998 release from this two-man Italian dark ambient/industrial project, their second, contains all the material from that same year’s debut release (1,2,4-8,13) plus added tracks. Ritualistic sounds from samples, digital effects, software processing and guitar. It’s mostly desolate drone that mines haunted loops for resonance. The average track length is about five minutes, but they feel longer because they are ‘spacious.’ The few tracks (3, 6, 8, 12) that loop simple, lovely melodies and which may or may not change over time are gloomy cinematic minimalism at its best. Other stuff is pure Lustmordian solar wind (1, 5, 6, 9). T.4 sounds like Raison D’Etre and t.10 is very reminiscent of early Brighter Death Now. The fact that I Burn, unlike their influences, construct their sounds electronically doesn’t make this any less well suited for zoning out and thinking evil thoughts. Soothing and poisonous, like hemlock. The worst thing I can think of to say about them is that their logo is cheesy.
