Cato Salsa Experience And… – “Sounds Like a Sandwich ” – [Smalltown Supersound]

One of those crazed-garage-rock-meets-avant-power-jazz type of things. A 2004 European jazz festival found wacky Norwegian rock quartet Cato Salsa Experience teaming up onstage with jazz trio The Thing, who themselves had a guest in legendary jazzman Joe McPhee. The expanded conglomeration blasted through a couple of Cato Salsa originals and some cover tunes, including a version of Whole Lotta Love that’s surprisingly straightforward (well, except for the squealing horns in the middle section). They also tackle songs by rockers The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and jazz trumpeter Don Ayler. This is great noisy fun. The horn players (The Thing’s Mats Gustafsson and the aforementioned McPhee) are particularly outrageous.
