Andrew Jackson Jihad – “People That Can Eat People Are The Luckiest People In The Wo” – [Asian Man Records]

Ok. One day in the future, music critics will say “some forms of alternative music in the first fifteen years of the 21st century were identified by a use of a variety of older folk instruments like the autoharp, banjo, zither, mouth harp, violin, glockenspiel and of course the grandaddies of all, the accordion and banjo. Always a banjo. The instruments brought possibly a simpler feel which worked perfectly to contrast with the lyrics detailing the troubles and foibles of living at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st century.” Maybe I’ll write that review.
In the meantime we have Andrew Jackson Jihad. Using a variety of the above mentioned instruments in conjunction with lyrics about defeat, serial killing, everyday nihilism, existentialism and a surprising amount of hope, cautious and filled with an understanding of the devastating faults of humans, yet cautious hope, AJJ play their hearts out. It sounds like a combo of Sufjan Stevens, Mountain Goats and Bright Eyes, but faster. It’s acoustic but pushed to the limit. It’s angry and sad and possibly there is a light at the end of the tunnel even though we don’t have to reach it. It’s folky, folkish, old timey in some cases. Whatever it is, put it on, jump around and don’t cry in your beer.
