Alkerdeel – “Morinde” – [ConSouling Sounds]

alkerdeel_morinde

Doom-disposed black metal from Belgium. This 2012 release is the quartet’s second full-length album. The two long tracks (1+4) vacillate between repetitive and atonal psych-sludge and full BM fury. Tortured harmonics and cagey unpredictability on these two cuts reminded me a little bit of recent work from Deathspell Omega; T.1 also has a sense of humor in the form of a curiously funky stoner rock bass part. T.2 is brief, crusty BM orthodoxy. T.3 begins with shoegaze-like tones and petulant spoken word before boiling over into further Antaeus-overload blastbeat aggression near its end. Curdled, somewhat hardcore-influenced vocals on all tracks, coughing or shouting intriguingly improvised lyrics. The compositions are at times evocative of ambient/depressive black metal projects (maybe Sortsind, Leviathan, Weakling, Forgotten Woods or Ash Borer) but have balls too. If Corrupted, Bone Awl and Shining all made an album together it might sound like this… OR WOULD IT? Crappy New Year one and all.
