Koner, Thomas – “Novaya Zemlya” – [Touch]

Novaya Zemlya means “new land” and is the name of a cluster of remote islands in the Arctic Ocean in the north of Russia. Right off the top, one is metaphysically thrown into that scenery and the sounds you’ll primarily hear are those of a throbbing heart (though when listening it sounds more like thunder at times), then it’s almost as if you’re being thrown into a wasteland. This listening experience is actually more than just distorted field recordings of a potential natural disaster; Komer is basically reminding us of how we’ve interacted with and impacted the world. Lots of nice experimental and rumbling sounds throughout Komer’s album.
