Mystifier – “Tormenting The Holy Trinity” – [Nuclear War Now! Productions]

mystifier

The mighty Mystifier formed in 1989 in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, and put out this demo the same year. This LP is actually part of Nuclear War Now!’s ‘Baphometic Goat Worship’ box set, which compiles the band’s work up until 1993 (we added their masterpiece ‘Goetia’ from this same set a few years back). ‘Tormenting the Holy Trinity’ shows Mystifier four years earlier, at their rawest. Mystifier’s rawest is extremely raw. This shit sounds like it was recorded by some sort of crude clay homunculi without thumbs rather than by angry young men from South America, almost veering into Necrobutcher territory at times. Brazilian black/death metal is consistently the best, possibly because they invented it. Frenzied bestial assaults here in the vein of compatriots Sarcofago, Holocausto, Mutilator and Vulcano. Apparently these teens also liked Slayer, Possessed and Bathory (B5 is a Bathory cover), but their obsession with Satan and the occult was also born from resentment of the fatal marriage between Catholicism and capitalism underpinning their society. The riffs of ‘Sarcastic’ are magickal passes inscribed with a rusty chainsaw. Drummer ‘Lucifuge Rofocale’ mans the gatling gun. It says ‘Death Metal’ on the back but this is Black through and through, and I don’t mean the band’s refreshingly swart members (who, incidentally, claim to have been greatly feared by local neo-Nazis). Hail Satan.
