Army of The Pharaohs – “Unholy Terror, The” – [Babygrande]

Army+Of+The+Pharaohs+The+Unholy+Terror

Army of the Pharaohs is a Hip-Hop collective formed 1998 in Pennsylvania by Vinnie Paz of Jedi Mind Tricks. This is their third release, from 2010. There are 15 rappers featured here: Vinnie Paz (t.s 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14+16) and fellow Jedi Jus Allah (t.s 5), Planetary (t.s 1, 4, 5, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15+16) and Crypt The Warchild (t.7, 8, 10, 12 +16) of Outerspace, Celph Titled (t.s 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11+16), Apathy (t.s 1, 3, 5, 9, 11, 15+16) and Esoteric (t.s 7, 9) of The Demigodz, Reef the Lost Cause (t.s 3, 11, 12+16) and King Magnetic (t.s 5, 9+16) of King & The Cauze, Demoz (t.s 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12+14), Doap Nixon (t.s 4, 12, 13, 14, 15), King Syze (t.s 6, 8+16), Des Devious (t.s 6, 10, 12+16), Journalist (t.16) and Block McCloud (t.13). This is tremendously impressive East Coast hardcore with stripped-down beats and aggressive, uptempo rhyming. Everyone gets a few good punchlines out, but Vinnie Paz and Planetary shine especially bright here. The production is strong and varied; check out the ‘mafioso’ sound on t.s 1, 3+6, heavy synths on t.s 2, 6, 8+12, soul samples on t.s 4+15, and Hollywood cheez on t.9. Lyrical content is violent and explicit (FCCs on all tracks), full of misanthropy, bravado and moderately hilarious tough-guy shit. There’s some pretty annoying homophobia on t.s 1, 8+12, but if you can see past its less enlightened moments, this is an extremely strong, flashy, straight-for-the-jugular release that made me feel like a badass while driving around. Its only remotely soft moment is t.15, which is about self-destructive ex-girlfriends. The standout tracks for me were 1, 9, 11, 12+14. AOTP don’t want to educate you; they just want to kill you. Start running.
