Molina, Juana – “Wed 21″ – [Crammed Discs]

Juana-Molina-Wed-21

Another outstanding production of pop confusion from Argentinian TV comedy star turned sonic soothsayer Juana Molina. This is her first album after 5 years and she only seems to have developed further her mysterious, frenetic style rooted in Patagonian folk traditions blasted to netherworlds of somber swirling electronics and restlessly jumping beats. A lot of variety on the album, with 5 an homage to her itchy restlessness going through various swells of tempo and intensity immediately calmed by the foggy serenity of 6 only to be broken by flickers of playful sunlight. She plays all her own instruments anchored by acoustic guitar with sensual driving bass rhythms and a hull of clear ambient vocals, all pushed by vibrant multi-colored sails of electronic oddities and pleasantries. Like the funky basslines of 9 narrating the listlessness of time rising out of a sea of eery dial tones and whale calls on 8. The opening tracks were my favorite; ‘Eras’ a sultry 7 beat cadence navigating 7 lifetimes of love and longing and then the title track an acapella circuit bent robot shuffle. Molina’s albums have astounded audiences and for good reason; she has a style all her own with equal parts tragedy and humor. A true artiste
