Corringham, Viv – “Walking” – [Innova/American Composers]

872cover

Literal soundscapes, done in a couple parts. Viv Corringham records locals on what she calls “shadow-walks.” Familiar routes are taken as they describe the things they see and what about the walk is significant. They go into restaraunts, through parks, anywhere and everywhere, finding places she wouldn’t have otherwise. Stumbling the streets in Portugal, Minneapolis, Hong Kong, London, and Brooklyn, Corringham threads together the interpersonality of a space with it’s sounds using just a sonic representation.

Then she goes back to the place and records her solo singing while she walks the same route and blends the two recordings together as one peice, “acknowledging the ‘now’ and the ‘then.’” The rhymic sound of footsteps is almost paralyzingly hypnotic, but you find yourself trying to focus on the conversation, trying to hear the experiences, and trying to bring yourself to that place.

“Your footsteps follow not what is outside the eyes, but what is within, buried, erased.”
