Creation Is Crucifixion – “Automata” – [Willowtip]

Automata

In Plato’s Phaedrus Socrates cites the Egyptian dialogue between King Thamus and Theuth, the messenger of the gods. When presented with the gift of writing, Thamus responds saying that writing will not help people remember more, but only make them appear wiser than they really are and “will rely on writing to bring things to their remembrance by external signs” essentially making us “tools of our tools.”

This is the central theme of 1999 debut full-length from Pittsburgh’s Creation is Crucifixion, insurgents against the techno-dystopia we live in. Alternating ambient noise and hardcore/metal they contemplate the end times inherent in technological innovation. Sci-fi field-recordings and silent sound studies of static submersion plummet into algorithmic deathcore and heavy metal horrors. There are essentially two entirely different faces to this record, subtle mind control metadrones and reactionary uprisings of mutinous math metal. The vinyl version has a bonus track (B.1 FCC) that melds the classical with the futuristic in a medieval arcade battle hymn meltdown containing nihilistic prophecy.

“The present doesn’t exist because the present is the future and the future is past”
