Deathstench – “Massed In Black Shadow” – [Black Plagve Productions]

deathstench

LA-based Deathstench is the project of 2/3 of Welter in Thy Blood (or, to put it another way, the lineup is Welter in Thy Blood without the drummer). They create music situated in the intersection of the black/doom metal and death industrial genres. This 2012 album is their second full-length, released (in the same year as their first!) through Black Plagve, a sub-label of Malignant Records. The bleak, cenophobically intricate compositions on this CD teem with half-hidden sounds and move with the clotted slowness of a nightmare, often favoring the low end. T.1 is straight up Grey Wolves industrial noise with buried samples of a TV report on a filicide/suicide. T.2 is depressive, monotonous doom metal (sans drums) that’s probably the closest thing to a WITB track here. T.3 (the only track not to feature incomprehensible shrieking) is layers upon layers of black drone gradually becoming hungrier. T.5 is eccentric drum-machine black metal in the vein of Sutekh Hexen. T.s 4+6, by concocting a nice blend of doom metal, dark ambient and noise, may be the most interesting pieces. It’s all pretty good stuff, though. Other possible influences include Gnaw Their Tongues and Wretched Worst. Music for the inside of a coffin.
