A Fine Mess – “Evil Olive” – [Self Released]

Local project that imploded on finally getting this short
release together. Starts out with a faux 1950′s surftone
prom dance instro style for ~30 seconds before veering
into a punk/pop toe-racing, heart-tapping sneer-off between
lead and backing vocals. Next up, more glue-sniffy vox
and a faux porno to close. “Poor Joe” keeps up the pace,
jumping jacks on railroad tracks. Should taste good to
Burger Record fans. “Food” slows down to mop up grunge
blood with a flannel shirt. On “Eggshells” the vocalist takes
his meds, somewhat unfortunately, and we get more of a rock
ballad. Nice little bassline that could keeps it afloat.
“Melvins at Tricks” is elevated by the chaotic party line
vocals, and then “Savage Antics” gets the motor going away.
Tearing up guitar asphalt and rim shot/handclap tick-tick-tock
percussion and some eavesdropped conversation, the glue is back
in the bag. Huff and puff. “I Love Jesus” almost sounds like
an afterthought to the previous “Antics” and then some weird
Jesus rapped vocals over a three chord monte and a twinkle-twinkle
finish. “My Obsession” hits the sex angst button a bit firmly but
it’s got those triplet half-chords that are always cute.
“This Place Gives Me The Creeps” chugs and mugs. “Time Travel”
puts the words up front, kinda feels like a Billy Bragg
appreciation society? It stops at 1:50 and then hidden at 2:50
is the beepy gag reel collage. Limited edition possibly made
available via personal extortion. -Thurston Hunger
