Hamel, Edward – “I Was There” – [Self-released]

I couldn’t find a lot about this piece. The artist may be a sound artist/composer from Chicago who studies composition at UC-San Diego. Supposedly his musical discourse is concerned with informational saturation and the resulting perspective of correspondance with unconventional, complex sonorities. I can tell you that this is a 26 minute piece with 10 second lull in between (split in 2 if you so desire). I can tell you that 5 seconds of silence erupts into a molten mass of crumbling static and glitched telecommunication meltdown. We’re then immersed in an endless vacuum that defragments and collapses in on itself at 10:50. At 11:00 a shimmering Eno tone drone drifts in and swells and skips into a sweep of Reich piano mantras that build and layer and lean and topple. I can tell you that there’s a wide variety of sounds within a very minimal framework, and that this is alternately grating, entrancing and soothing. I can tell you to play it and don’t look back.
