Sassetti, Bernardo – “Unreal: Sidewalk Cartoon” – [Clean Feed]

My first impression was wow what a dark beauty this has…not so much
jazz as sdtk. Sure enough Sassetti *was* a noted composer for film, in
addition to being an heir to Sid??nio Pais, President of Portugal’s
First Republic he was a photographer of sorts and he may have been
shooting when he died from a fall off the cliffs of Guincho in 2012.
Like his death, this music has a somewhat mysterious and at times
tragic air to it. And I’m not just talking about “Ernesto” (#3) which also
features a great expanding horn section. I prefer when Sassetti
charts the horns that way then some of the solo horn work here. His
use of marimba, steel drum and other resonant instruments are really
what launch the goose bumps. He’s a pianist at the base, but more prone
to drop still notes into a well rather than ramp up the vamping. His take
on Monk’s “Evidence” is indeed evidence of Sassetti’s fondness for tuned
percussion. Another cover, “Si Te Contara” starts with orchestral random
warmup, before a cold glassy organ dances into the darkness. Oboe and
bassoon are called upon on this CD to embellish the shadows of sound.
“Dominio da Musica” is another pensive slinker, where Sassetti uses the
soft rain of cymbals and more iso-piano drops. 2007 release, quite unique
from the Clean Feed sonic pantry. His wife breaks your heart in “It’s All
Gone Pete Tong” btw…
