Waldron / Stapleton / Sigmarsson / Haynes / Faulhaber “The Sleeping Moustache” [Helen Scarsdale Agency]

Essential figures in underground counterculture & music combine forces and manipulate irregular audio for an experimental project named The Sleeping Moustache. Does that sound weird? Yes, the idea that a moustache slumbers is imaginatively absurd. Likewise the inebriated gloppy goo bubbling into your ears is just as conceptually shrouded & clouded. Nocturnal necromancers Waldron & Faulhaber (irr. app. (ext).), Stapleton (Nurse With Wound), Sigmarsson (Stilluppsteypa), and Haynes (who manipulates rust & decay) mystify with alchemical acoustics & electronic amalgamations. Expelling nonsensical incantations conjures the minimal phlegmatic elements, gradually manifesting even more growing sound formations. Crackling mantras, echoing & looped down pitched clamor exude. Unpredictable bonks, cranks, clanks, creaking, electronic buzzing, rattling metal, intercom beeps, grunting, writhing, squirming, and pounding? all uniquely injected nuances that stimulate illusory awareness. Appreciation stems not from understanding the veiled intricate mechanism, but rather your personal experience of the enigma.

There is a small error in your review in that the Jim Haynes who contributed to The Sleeping Moustache is not a poet nor did he found International Times. Of course, there was a Jim Haynes who did such things; but the gentleman in question is known more for his manipulation of decay and rust for installations and sound compositions. The folly of having a commonplace name.

  • Yeah, I wasn’t sure if that was the right guy. Couldn’t find much information of Jim Haynes for this project. Thank you for pointing it out and I’ll make the correction pronto.
