Gospel Truth – “a Lonely Man Does Foolish Things” – [12XU (Austin, TX)]

The Austin, Texas quartet, The Gospel Truth, is definititely preaching the gospel, but the darker side. And isn’t that always more fun anyway? They have been compared to The Fall, Toiling Midgets, and The Flesheaters, which are some pretty big shoes to fill and that is not really fair to them. They are most assuredly a darker rock and roll/post punk band with a southern influence as heard on their first track “Figure A”. It’s a good strong start with crashing guitars, fuzzing bass, polyrhythmic drum beats and angry man vocals. There is also a keyboard which works well. The eight songs on this debut album are filled with this instrumental combination as well as a sax dropped in once in awhile. Which actually works. Mark Tonucci, lead singer/keyboardists/sax player gruffly shouts out lyrics while guitars rip around with the angular twang of an occasional pulled note. The bass lines are that heavy, repeated, thumping type that get into the listener and then explode in all directions. Drums propel the music along with an angry beat. With this combination they are able to hit on that southern feel, touch on some bluesy stylings, and even take up a long 13 minute jam/drone. It all works fairly well and will be appreciated by those who enjoy a good kick in the pants kind of rock sound.
