Five Days Married & Other Laments: Northern Greece 1928-58 [coll] – [Angry Mom Records]

five_days_married
If you don’t love this album for the amazing sour powerful
sound, then you can love it for the history of music from
Greece circa 1928-58. Or you can love it for the R. Crumb
cover. Or you can love it for detailed liners notes, learn
of the harmony of the sheep bells. You already love gate-fold
vinyl releases I presume. You could love it (wrongly) for the
seemingly sardonic title, bit then fall in love with the
bitter tragic beauty at its core. Or love the 1940 version
of sex is confusion courtesy of the Litou sisters. Love
the amazing virtuosity of the players, love the aching
yearn of the singers (polyphonic power in particular).
Love the blend of Balkan/Roma/Rembetika/Klezmer passion
that pores through on every cut. Just love this, even if
it leaves you wounded. From the opening “Skaros” (as
exciting as any improv you’ll ever hear, I guess it was
a flute but first thought it was a shepherd’s bagpipes)
this collection of 78′s commands your attention, especially
the first side which felt particularly timeless despite the
patina of pops and character crackles. Christopher King
delivers again, Angry Mom’s gotta lotta happy illegitimate
followers. This Epirotic villages kicks “Erotic City’s”
tiny purple ass. The triumph of lament!
