Paavoharju – “Yha Hamaraa ” – [Fonal Records]

I think an interesting angle on this fine Fonal release is at
times it sounds as if it were made by one person instead of
the eight involved. It’s hard for me to conduct audiophoresis
and separate out where one member ends and another begins, so
that speaks of a divine communication in the band, really this
release reminded me of Gerald Hawk’s sterling solo scramble of
samples. Are the lead singers live or something stolen off an
asian satellite feed? Actually they’re Finnish as befits Fonal,
but their ephemeral pop rides like spores on the wind across
continents. Born from brothers, Olli & Lauri Ainala, they’ve
added much with vocalistas Soila Virtanen & Jenni Koivistoinen
who bring an operatic longing in parts, warning whispers in
others. This should be placed at weddings, in a cathedral of
trees. The men-folk aren’t above helping with the singing
chores as well, track 9 is an anthem you sing along with even
though you have no idea what the words are. This is a collective
that counts, big band that values its little moments. Too bad
it wasn’t released on a 78 rpm for your wind-up gramaphone,
that is where it would sound best. Love it. -Thurston Hunger
